Mattress Buying Guide
Your mattress is arguably the most important piece of furniture in your home. If you get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep per night, you end up spending a third of your life on your mattress. To put it simply, if you have had your mattress for nine years, it would be reasonable to say you have spent about three of those years on your mattress. Three years. This is not to count the hours spent in bed with the newspaper and a coffee, watching Netflix, or with a good book. The point being, we spend a lot of time on our mattress—make sure you have a good one.
If you are in the market for a new mattress, here are some important considerations:
Size
The question of mattress size is an important one. Feeling cramped or not having enough space to spread out comfortably will impact your overall sleep and restfulness throughout the night. When it comes time to pick a mattress size, ask yourself these questions:
Do you share your bed with others (A partner? Children? Pets?)
How tall are you?
How big is your bedroom?
For most, a queen mattress is known as the perfect balance of sleeping space without taking up too much space in the bedroom. However, if you must share your bed with a partner, pets, and children or you are larger in stature, you may want to consider a king option for more width. If you have the room, a California King offers even more space.
Comfort & Support
Support refers to the ability of your mattress’ structure to resist the downwards pressure applied to it by the weight of your body. While the material layers on the top of your mattress are usually for comfort, our support layers are found in the firming pads or high-density foam.
A mattress that offers adequate support will curve with your body and allow your spine to keep its natural alignment throughout the night, allowing you to sleep comfortably and longer than you would otherwise. If your mattress is too hard, it will not curve with your body and, if your mattress is too soft, it will not adequately support your spine.
Whether you sleep on your side, your back, or your stomach plays a large role when deciding on the right mattress.Side sleepers typically need a soft or medium-firm mattress that will contour the curves of the body while stomach sleepers will require a medium-firm or firm mattress to protect the lower back and spine alignment. Back sleepers have more freedom to choose soft, medium, or firm with the most important attribute being that their mattress provides ample support to their body.
Materials & Construction
With so many mattress options in the market today, it can be difficult to even know where to begin. The right mattress for you will depend on the kind of sleeper you are. Whether you tend to be too hot at night, suffer from back pain, or are shopping on a budget, we have a wide range of mattresses to meet your needs.
Innerspring An innerspring mattress will provide a firmer feel and a variety of options. The traditional innerspring mattress is constructed with interlocked spring coils and is considered the most popular mattress type.
Memory Foam An all-foam mattress cradles the heaviest parts of your body while you sleep and will conform to your curves for a soft, comfortable sleep.
Gel Memory Foam All the benefits of traditional memory foam with cooling technologies to dissipate heat evenly and regulate your temperature throughout the night.
Pillow top Simply add an additional layer of comfort that is stitched onto your innerspring or foam mattress to provide more comfort and cushion for your body.
An uneven or unsupported base can significantly decrease the longevity of your mattress. Investing in a solid foundation will help to absorb shock, reduce wear and tear, and keep your mattress supportive for years to come.
