Singles Day was started in the 90s by a group of young, male students in China who wanted to create an alternative to Valentine’s Day for the unattached. The celebration of singlehood quickly spread, evolving into a fun, unofficial holiday where all single people—both male and female—were encouraged to celebrate by buying themselves gifts.
To give singles extra incentive to shop, a famous Chinese e-retailer launched the first-ever Singles Day sale in 2009. The event was a resounding success and helped propel the holiday into the global shopping phenomenon it is today, bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined! If you haven't heard of it until now, trust us, it's big.
Here in North America, Singles Day is steadily gaining ground and, whether you are single or attached, it’s the perfect opportunity to snag a deal on something you’ve had your eye on.
