Celebrating Singles

Singles Day was started in the 90s by a group of young, male students in China who wanted to create an alternative to Valentine’s Day for the unattached. The celebration of singlehood quickly spread, evolving into a fun, unofficial holiday where all single people—both male and female—were encouraged to celebrate by buying themselves gifts.

To give singles extra incentive to shop, a famous Chinese e-retailer launched the first-ever Singles Day sale in 2009. The event was a resounding success and helped propel the holiday into the global shopping phenomenon it is today, bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined! If you haven't heard of it until now, trust us, it's big.

Here in North America, Singles Day is steadily gaining ground and, whether you are single or attached, it’s the perfect opportunity to snag a deal on something you’ve had your eye on. (As if we need an excuse to treat ourselves!) So, in honour of Singles Day, we thought we’d do a quick round-up of some of our favourite things about being single, along with a curated shopping list of our must-haves for singles and non-singles alike.

Top Five Reasons to LOVE Being Single

Reason 1: Every spot is your favourite spot
When you don’t have to share the sofa, you don’t have to pick a spot! Left side, right side, or smack-dab in the middle—being single means never having to commit to one favourite spot. And, if you want to stretch out and binge Netflix, you won’t have to rush to get there first.

Reason 2: Starfishing
There’s a lot of real estate on that mattress and it’s all yours, so go ahead and take all the room you need. You can sleep peacefully in your little cocoon of solitude knowing that all around the neighbourhood, couples are battling it out to claim an even share of blanket.

Reason 3: What’s for dinner? Whatever you want.
Someone once said that marriage is 40 years of asking the question “any thoughts about dinner?” Well, when you’re single you don’t have to worry about what anyone else wants to eat. (Unless you’re single with kids and then the answer is usually chicken fingers.) Pancakes one night and Pad Thai the next? You do you.

Reason 4: All—and we mean ALL—of the ice cream is yours
Being single means never having to hide the Ben & Jerry’s at the back of the freezer behind the frozen meatballs and under a bag of peas. Not only can you have your favourite frozen treats front and center, you can eat right out of the carton and put it back half-empty knowing it’ll still be there tomorrow. Or at midnight.

Reason 5: Total control of the remote
The wireless TV remote control was invented in the mid-50s, kicking off an age of convenience and, for everyone who’s been forced to relinquish control, frustration. Whether you are a flipper, a skipper, or a set-it-and-forget-it, having command of the remote is just as satisfying when you’re watching TV alone.
